The Veterinary Nurse Residency 2025-2028 has been developed to support veterinary nurses who want to achieve their Veterinary Technician Specialism (VTS), in a specific discipline in which they would already hold extensive experience in.
The programme has been carefully designed to allow successful applicants the opportunity to spend three years studying towards a Veterinary Technician Specialist qualification in a specific subject area. We are open to applications in the following areas: Emergency and Critical Care, Anaesthesia and Analgesia, Internal Medicine, Neurology.

Key Features of the Veterinary Nursing Residency:
- Comprehensive exposure to a specialist area of veterinary nursing in a high-volume referral setting.
- The first year will be spent within your chosen discipline to build up number of supervised hours and gain experience and practical skills. You will officially apply and be enrolled in your VTS training in year two and aim to complete this in year three.
- Mentorship from the Vet Nurse Resident Lead and a designated mentor tailored to your specialist area.
- Teaching and supervision of Veterinary and Veterinary Nursing undergraduates on clinical rotations.
- Participation in the OOH rota including twilight shifts and weekend work.
- Allocated off clinics time to study towards your VTS qualification.
- Examination fees and associated costs to attend the VTS conference in the USA are included.
Eligibility Criteria:
- RCVS Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) with considerable experience in a specified subject area (see website for further details as this varies by specialty).
- A strong passion for animal welfare, patient care, and advancing veterinary nursing practice.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well within a collaborative, multidisciplinary team.
The veterinary nursing residency programme has been created to give veterinary nurses protected time and support, for them to learn from specialist nurses and board-certified specialist veterinary surgeons to gain advanced nursing skills and knowledge. This type of programme will empower veterinary nurses and push the profession forward. We have shown great success in supporting our nurses to achieve their veterinary technician specialism at Langford. As a teaching hospital we are set up to provide the required support and we understand the dedication required to achieve this prestigious qualification.
