Bluebell - Excess Skin Removal

Bluebell the Pot-bellied Pig was referred to Langford Farm Animal Practice with significant excess abdominal skin following a 100kg weight loss! The skin was dragging on the floor, becoming damaged and impairing her ability to move around, and the decision was made that the best option would be to have this removed.

She had an abdominal ultrasound to rule out any mammary or abdominal masses before being cleared for surgery. Working alongside the Soft-tissue Surgeons and the Anaesthesia team in Langford Small Animal Referral Hospital, Bluebell had a 30x25cm section of skin and mammary tissue removed under general anaesthetic.

Bluebell had some sickness on recovery but had some medicines to help her feel better! She was discharged 4 days later with some continued pain relief and was much more comfortable.

Although there were some complications with wound breakdown and seroma formation, these were quickly identified and treated by her referring vet. Bluebell is much happier now she can move around without standing on herself!
