Iona presented with a recurrent abscess on her body wall with a history of around 8 months. Initially, she was treated with courses of systemic antibiotics and flushing of the wound but this did not solve the problem. Swabs were taken for culture and sensitivity, with more systemic antibiotics and topical also being used, but still the abscess recurred.
She was then sedated for further flushing of the abscess, and a small bone sequestrum was removed, however the abscess still persisted! An X-Ray was taken, and a large bony sequestrum was identified. She was sedated once again here at Langford, and working alongside one of our equine vet team, Jenny Mason, who helped to identify the sequestrum using ultrasound, a large bone sequestrum was removed from her chest wall – likely a rib from previous trauma!
