Merlin's Journey at Langford Vets
History - Merlin was referred to the orthopaedic team after he was reviewed at his local vets where he presented ongoing right forelimb lameness. X-rays of his forelimbs were inconclusive and when he was presented to the orthopaedic team at Langford Vets he displayed signs of discomfort with manipulation of both elbows. He demonstrated difficulty rising after rest and was graded as 5/10 lame on the right forelimb with mild lameness in the left also noted.
Investigations – A CT scan of both elbows was performed and documented bilateral medial coronoid disease with fragmented right side as well as signs of mild bilateral degenerative new bone formation.
Treatment – A right elbow arthroscopy was performed, and the fragment was removed. Post surgery Merlin was provided with a course of Metacam and strictly rested for 6 weeks.
Onward care – Merlin was then referred to the physiotherapy and hydrotherapy team. A tailored home exercise programme was set, and hydrotherapy commenced so he could exercise in a controlled environment. This helped to build muscle and improve strength in the supporting structures around his elbows. Sessions were initially weekly, progressing to fortnightly and then every 4 to 6 weeks to provide maintenance treatment and prevent any further relapses of lameness.
