Registration of Birds

All birdkeepers, regardless of the size of their flock, will be required to officially register their birds under new measures announced by Defra.

As of 1st October the minimum number of birds for which mandatory registration applies reduced from 50 to 1. Psittacines and passerines (budgies, parrots, canaries and similar species) that are kept indoors or in a dedicated ‘bird house’ without any outside access will be exempt from the changes.

Bird keepers will need to provide information, including their contact details, the location where birds are kept and details of the birds (species, number and what they are kept for).

Keepers of fewer than 50 birds will need to visit: GOV.UK | Register as a keeper of less than 50 poultry or other captive birds.

Keepers of 50 birds or more will need to visit: GOV.UK | Poultry and other captive birds: registration rules and forms.
