One year old Chocolate Labrador Ruby was initially diagnosed with hip dysplasia in 2013. Her clinical signs had been managed well with conservative treatment including anti-inflammatory medication and exercise modification.
In 2018 it was noticed that she was appearing increasingly stiff on her hindlimbs, her exercise tolerance was decreasing and she was requiring more regular anti-inflammatory medication to assist with her discomfort. She was therefore referred to Langford vets in 2018.
Examination at Langford revealed a marked reduction in her range of hip movement and associated joint discomfort bilaterally (both sides). Radiographs revealed marked bilateral hip osteoarthritis.
Treatment options were fully discussed and after careful consideration of the options Ruby’s owners elected to proceed with right total hip replacement surgery. This was performed in June 2018.

Following a 12 week recovery period Ruby returned to normal activity. It was not too long before her left hip started to cause her more notable discomfort. We therefore recently examined Ruby again and performed left total hip replacement. Ruby has now returned to pain free exercise and is enjoying an active lifestyle once again.
Total hip replacement is now available for canine and feline patients of all sizes affected with degenerative, traumatic and developmental conditions of the hip joint.
It is the only treatment that fully restores life-long mobility. It is a highly successful orthopaedic procedure and last year alone at Langford we perform over 70 total hip replacement surgeries. We use the latest cementless and cemented implants, therefore catering for patients of any size.
