Georgina Knight

After graduating from Cardiff University with a first class degree in Genetics in 2001, I spent 3 years working alongside Dr Chris Helps investigating feline upper respiratory tract infections in the early years of the Molecular Diagnostic Unit. The strong foundation in molecular biology gained during this time led me to complete a PhD in Molecular Immunology in 2009 at Bristol Vet School.

In 2010 I was invited to go to Uganda for 3 months to work in the MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS to help setup qPCR tests in their molecular biology facility. On my return I moved to the Medical School in Bristol as a post-doctoral Research Assistant in Ophthalmology, being promoted to Senior Research Associate in 2015. In this role I gained opportunities to work on a variety of projects, bringing my molecular biology expertise to the research group and continuing to expand my skills with advancements in technology.

I moved to the Molecular Diagnostic Unit in April 2018 to begin my present role supporting the research and development of new diagnostic assays to detect infectious and genetic diseases of companion animals; returning to work alongside Dr Chris Helps in the Molecular Diagnostic Unit. I became Head of the Molecular Diagnostic Unit in 2020.

Georgina graduated in 1983 from Nottingham University with a BSc Hons in Agricultural Science and launched her career with the Ministry of Agriculture Veterinary Investigation Centres. She learned techniques in microbiology, virology, biochemistry and parasitology.

Following the birth of her daughter, Georgina began a career of 15 years as a State Registered Biomedical Scientist in the NHS at various locations in the UK, including Health Protection Agency (Public Health England) at Porton Down. During this time, she attained Chartered Scientist status with the Institute of Biomedical Science and an MSc in Biomedical Science at Cardiff in 2000.

During her career, Georgina has gathered extensive scientific knowledge and experience of different technologies from private, public and government health, pharmaceutical manufacturing and clinical research facilities. Alongside this technical background, she has also been a partner in a small business, gained life skills experience, as a team worker and building collaborative relationships. Georgina has consistently championed improvement projects using a variety of management tools eg Lean Six Sigma and Operational Excellence (OE).

With the accrued experience in managing teams and laboratories providing a technical service, Georgina is delighted to join the Langford Vets team and returning to the veterinary world.

Her main interests outside of work are linked with gardening, following a variety of sports, and sharing a rural location with her husband and four cats.

Simon has worked within the Haematology laboratory for 14 years, having previously worked within the University of Bristol in many Departments as a trainee and won the training award 3 years in succession.

During his Applied Biology Degree course he was also awarded the science faculty award for attainment. He has developed a wide depth of knowledge and experience, by close involvement with the clinical team and his particular interest in research.

He has been co-author on many scientific publications and has presented at the BSAVA congress. He is the system manager for the diagnostic laboratory’s computer system and has a particular interest in evaluation of new techniques in haematology and coagulation.

Dave graduated in 2007 with a BSc (Hons) in Forensic Science, from there he spent two and a half years at the Forensic Science Service within their DNA unit, before bringing his talent and expertise to our Molecular Diagnostic Unit in late 2011.
