What is a cystotomy tube?
A cystotomy tube is a device that is placed through the skin and into the bladder. It's purpose is to allow for external manual drainage of urine directly into the bladder.
- The cystotomy tube can allow you to bypass the urinary tract if there is an obstruction, for example a tumour, stones or inflammation.
- The tube is held in place within the bladder via an inflated balloon, shown in the image. We call the exit point at the skin level a stoma.

Your pet has been fitted with a MIC-KEY Low Profile cystotomy tube. With some simple training, this will allow you to drain your pet’s bladder at home.
- You will be provided with the compatible extension set which will allow you to unlock/open the valve and empty the bladder. You must only use the compatible extension set (provided) or you risk damaging the port.
- There is an anti-reflux valve within the port which prevents urine from leaking out of the tube when the cap is opened.
- When not in use, the tube port is capped off with the attached protective cover to keep it clean.
- We recommend keeping the port covered with a medical pet shirt or ensure that your pet is wearing a buster collar to prevent them from interfering or damaging it.
- You will be provided with a compatible syringe which will connect to the extension set.
- The lifespan of the tube varies between each patient. The tube may need a simple procedure to replace it in the future.

Cystotomy Tube Care
- Clean the MIC-KEY tube daily. Care is simple and easy.
- The port can be rotated in a full circle for cleaning underneath. It can help to keep the area around the port clear of hair – clipping this short as required.
- Clean the port itself with the F10 wipes provided. Gently clean the skin around the stoma with soapy water, then dry thoroughly.
- Check the stoma site for signs of redness, discharge or swelling.
Bladder drainage procedure
Frequency – We recommend emptying your pet’s bladder 4-6 times per day.

1. To begin with, ensure that you have washed your hands or have applied alcohol hand gel prior to handling the tube.
2. Start by closing the clamp on the extension set.
3. To attach the extension set to the patient, open the protective cap on the tube port, then align the black line on the extension set connector with the black line on the port. Insert the extension set into the port then rotate it ¼ turn clockwise to lock into place.

4. Next attach the compatible syringe (provided) to the other end of the extension set.
5. Open the clamp on the extension set and slowly pull on the syringe plunger to drain urine from the bladder. If urine production exceeds one syringe full, clamp the extension set prior to disconnecting the syringe to empty. This process can be repeated until no more urine can be emptied from the bladder.
6. Monitor urine for abnormalities in colour or smell. Dispose of urine down the toilet.

4. Next attach the compatible syringe (provided) to the other end of the extension set.
5. Open the clamp on the extension set and slowly pull on the syringe plunger to drain urine from the bladder. If urine production exceeds one syringe full, clamp the extension set prior to disconnecting the syringe to empty. This process can be repeated until no more urine can be emptied from the bladder.

8. Immediately after each use, wash the extension set in warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly and then use Milton cold water sterilising solution. Please follow manufacturing instructions. Allow to air dry.
