We have an exciting opportunity for a Registered Veterinary Nurse to join our anaesthesia team at Langford Vets, Small Animal Hospital.  

We are looking for an enthusiastic, driven nurse with a strong interest in anaesthesia. 

This role is for 40 hrs/week on average over a 6-week period, including weekend and bank holiday work.

Our anaesthesia nurses play an integral role within the anaesthesia team running anaesthetics, under the supervision of our senior anaesthetist, whilst also supervising students on their rotations. They are given case responsibility and are encouraged to further their knowledge with journal clubs and CPD.  

Previous experience in a referral environment is desirable but not essential. They will be involved with teaching and supervision of Veterinary and Veterinary Nursing undergraduates on clinical rotations.  

The successful candidate will work alongside senior clinicians, residents, and anaesthesia nurses within a busy multidisciplinary hospital.

Salary for this role is between: £28,730.75 (1 year experience) - £34,726.93, dependent on experience.

Job purpose

Reports To:              Head Anaesthesia Nurse

Job Purpose:

The main purpose of the post is to provide nursing support for the Anaesthesia department. This will primarily require the preparation for and the delivery of anaesthesia under the supervision of a Veterinary Surgeon and the post-anaesthesia care of patients. Other responsibilities will include teaching and supervision of the veterinary and nursing undergraduates, managing the out- patient referral caseload, maintaining patient records, ordering and stock control of controlled drugs and equipment maintenance and service records.

Principal Accountabilities:-

  • To provide specialist nursing support to the Anaesthesia department. Prepare for and assist with delivery of anaesthesia, monitoring of patients under anaesthesia and recovery of patient’s post-anaesthesia. This will be under the supervision of a Veterinary Surgeon. To include surgical procedures and procedures such as endoscopy, imaging, MRI, CT and any other procedures deemed suitable by the Anaesthesia Clinical Lead.
  • Maintain accurate patient records with regards to clinical notes, treatment, client communication and client/patient information. To include charging for anaesthetics
  • Ensure that all procedures and consumables are accurately entered onto patient computer records in order to keep communication records and invoice up to date at all times during their stay.
  • Assessment and supervision of veterinary and veterinary nursing undergraduates during clinical rotations. Assessing the students on a daily basis and advising them as necessary. To include discussion of clinical cases under supervision of Veterinary Surgeon.
  • Acting as Clinical Coach and Professional Mentor for the Veterinary Nursing Undergraduates
  • Ordering and stocktake of controlled drugs in line with LVS policies.
  • Maintenance of anaesthesia equipment and organisation of servicing and repairs in line with LVS policies.
  • Maintaining a good working relationship with all team members.
  • Communicating in an effective and pleasant manner with clients and colleagues.
  • Carry out all other reasonable duties as requested by the line manager
  • To participate within the OOH rota which will include weekends.
  • Responsible for keeping themselves and others safe, reporting accidents, near misses and hazards and adhering to health and safety requirements and policies as required by the business/their line manager.
