About the Role
We have an exciting opportunity for someone to work as an ICU nurse in our specialist referral hospital! This is a full time permanent position working 40 hours per week.
We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic, and passionate veterinary nurse to join our ICU nursing, animal care assistant and clinician team.
The successful candidate will work in our ICU ward, alongside the ICU nursing and clinician team, caring for the ICU patients, supporting with ICU procedures, and providing support to our OOH’s service.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a high standard of nursing care, a desire to learn and a capability to work under pressure. They will need to be dynamic and able to work well in a fast pace, ever changing environment. They should also be able to demonstrate working collaboratively with their peers, both within the clinical and non-clinical setting.
You will be involved with teaching and supervision of Veterinary and Veterinary Nursing undergraduates on clinical rotations.
Flexibility will be necessary as the post will require participation in a team rota involving shift and weekend work.
Salary for this role is £26,725.60 - £34,726.93 for a full time position depending on experience

Job purpose
Job Purpose:
The main purpose of the post is to support the efficient running of the clinical activities within the intensive care unit, working on a rota basis to include weekends & bank holidays, assisting with procedures and ensuring excellent standards of patient care as well as ensuring support is available for our First Opinion OOH service.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Assisting veterinary surgeons with critical care cases and clinical procedures such as chest drain placement, IVFT, blood transfusions, oxygen therapy.
- Ensure that the equipment within the area is used appropriately and is well maintained, always ensure good levels of supplies, and assist with monthly and annual audits as managed by the Stock Control Officer.
- Ensure adequate nursing plans to include nutrition are set up and reassessed as required in relation to the patients needs.
- Ability to demonstrate and perform laboratory skills within the unit.
- Assessment of BVSc and veterinary nursing undergraduates during their rotation through the intensive care unit.
- Acting as Clinical Coach for our nursing students
- Acting as a professional mentor for our nursing students
- Ensuring cleanliness and hygiene are maintained within the unit, working to the guidance of the checklist within these areas.
- Responsibility of being involved with the infection control.
- Dispensing and administering (under the direct supervision of a veterinary surgeon) medication to animals, maintaining accurate stock control and following all protocols relating to drug holding, dispensing and handling and giving clear and accurate instructions to clients when dispensing medication
- Assisting with stock control and ordering as required. Resource other equipment with the supervision of your line manager which will help improve the efficiency of the area.
- Maintaining accurate patient records with regards to all clinical notes, treatment, diagnoses, client communication and client /patient information
- Ensuring that all procedures and consumables are accurately entered onto the patients’ records in order to keep the invoice up to date at all times during their stay.
- Participating in a nurse rota sharing OOH cover and working different shifts on a rotational basis
- Proactively identify and act upon opportunities for business improvement. Openly identify and discuss problems in order to implement and sustain improvements that increase the value we deliver to our, clients, employees, and students.
