Langford Vets are excited to recruit a Scientist to join the specialist Diagnostic Laboratories team which encompasses expertise in Haematology, Biochemistry, Cytology, Microbiology and Molecular Diagnostics. The Diagnostic Laboratories are an ECVCP (European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology) accredited laboratory, positioned alongside Langford Vets’ first opinion practices and specialist referral centre for small animals, allowing delivery of fast turnaround times and exceptional patient care.

We are looking for a Scientist with experience in developing and validating diagnostic assays, with a particular focus on molecular biology and sequencing. The Diagnostic Laboratories are located in North Somerset, on the edge of the Mendip Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Job purpose

Reports to:    Director of Diagnostic Laboratories

Job Purpose:

To work with staff in the Diagnostic Laboratories to identify opportunities to expand and improve services.

To develop and optimise new diagnostic tests and troubleshoot technical and scientific issues with existing tests.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Support the development of new veterinary diagnostic tests in response to customer needs (diagnostic and research) and in collaboration with Diagnostic Laboratory staff.

  • Select appropriate methodologies and technologies for test development and develop protocols for optimized test performance.

  • Conduct and analyse validation studies to ensure tests are accurate, reliable and reproducible.

  • Troubleshoot technical and scientific issues with tests run in the Diagnostic Laboratories.

  • Support quality assurance in the Diagnostic Laboratories, including monitoring and participation in quality assurance schemes.

  • Maintain accurate records of work.

  • Provide training and support to Diagnostic Laboratory staff on new tests and procedures.

  • Expand the genetic testing services including new test development, optimization of workflow and troubleshooting.

  • Stay up to date with the latest advancements in technology and methodology relating to services offered by the Diagnostic Laboratories.

  • Contribute to national and international research collaborations and publications, raising the profile of the Diagnostic Laboratories.

  • Assist with marketing initiatives to promote the Diagnostic Laboratories.

  • Follow all Langford Vets’ protocols and policies.

  • Undertake relevant training as requested to expand services offered within Langford Vets.

  • Communicate in an effective and professional manner with clients and colleagues.

  • Proactively identify and act upon opportunities for business improvement. Openly identify and discuss problems in order to implement and sustain improvements that increase the value we deliver to our clients, employees, and students.
