Interested in this role?

The successful candidate needs to be motivated, organised and passionate about the teaching of others. Previous experience specifically with Dermatology cases is not essential but desirable, however the candidate should have an interest in this area and be keen to develop skills through their clinical work and self-directed learning.

The successful candidate will be involved in skin biopsies, in-house cytology, diagnostic imaging for Dermatology cases, stock control, patient admits, blood sampling, IV placement and other laboratory work. As well as client communication and teaching students on clinics as part of their rotations.

Previous experience in a referral environment is desirable but not essential.

Flexibility will be necessary as the post will require participation in the weekend rota which will require nursing in ward areas across the hospital.

Reports to:            Assistant Nursing Manager

Job Purpose:

The main purpose of the post is to be responsible for organising the clinical activities and the in-patient caseload within the Dermatology Department. This will include owner visits and discharge appointments, triage of advice calls, attending in-patient rounds, assisting with procedures, ordering/stocking consumables and maintaining equipment. The job holder will also be responsible for the development and running of clinics, to include inpatient and outpatient caseload. They will also assist with co-ordinating and collecting data for research projects.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Communication with owners regarding in-patients as appropriate, to include liaison with the nursing team and arranging owner visits.
  • Triage of advice calls, to include answering simple queries, managing client expectations and acquiring appropriate information to forward to the Dermatology team.
  • Routine discharge appointments, to include instructions/advice on likely side effects of medications, clinical responses, need for monitoring tests (blood tests and urine tests)
  • Maintenance of microscope, otoscopes and all dermatology equipment, assist in drug and equipment re-ordering and maintain adequate stock levels.
  • Assisting dermatologist/s as appropriate, to include setting up for all dermatology related procedures, inpatient care, restraint of patients for examinations and procedures.
  • Co-ordination and data collection for research projects, and liaison with other relevant staff and departments for the transfer of patients/joint projects
  • Assessment and supervision of BVSc and VNCAB/VNBS undergraduates during clinical rotations. To include undertaking the role of Clinical Coach
  • Assist with the personal Tutor programme for the veterinary nursing programme.
  • Provision of CPD for internal and external nurses, to include webinars and presentations.
  • Maintaining a good working relationship with all team members.
  • Communicating in an effective and pleasant manner with clients and colleagues.
  • Proactively identify and act upon opportunities for business improvement.  Openly identify and discuss problems in order to implement and sustain improvements that increase the value we deliver to our, clients, employees, and students.

Minimum of 12 months working as a VN in clinical practice

Previous experience with dermatology cases

RCVS listed veterinary nurse

Interest in advancing own qualifications
