Langford Vets are delighted to welcome applications to our next round of recruitment for our European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Companion Animal) (ECVIM-CA) approved residency programme, subject to satisfactory annual review of your progress.

Your primary role will be the provision of a clinical referral service, working with specialists within our dynamic and collaborative Canine and Feline Medicine and Emergency and Critical Care teams, alongside other specialities within the Small Animal Referral Hospital. You will receive clinical training in all aspects of Veterinary Internal Medicine and its affiliated disciplines. You will be expected to study for the ECVIM diploma in Small Animal Internal Medicine and to actively participate in clinical research, including the submission of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. You will also participate in under and postgraduate clinical teaching and continuing education during the residency programme.

To be considered for this position, candidates should be able to demonstrate a clear passion for Internal Medicine; be fluent in English; be eligible to work in the UK; be registered with, or eligible for membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons; have completed the equivalent of two years primary care clinical practice and a rotating internship within a multi-disciplinary referral hospital.

Positions will commence from January 2025.

Job Purpose

  • To provide an outstanding medicine clinical referral service, as part of the medicine team
  • To provide exceptional patient care
  • To communicate and liaise effectively with staff working within the wider medicine team and other services within the hospital to ensure cases are managed appropriately and efficiently
  • To demonstrate excellent communication skills with referring vets and pet owners
  • To assist with clinical teaching and supervision of undergraduate students and interns as and when required
  • To meet the requirements for credentials set by the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ECVIM)

Principal Accountabilities:

  • To ensure continuing success of the medicine referral service, by provision of outstanding clinical and patient care, under the supervision of medicine specialists.
  • To work alongside and interdigitate with multidisciplinary teams, to provide excellent care for all patients.
  • To perform patient assessments and interventions to the standard expected by the RCVS.
  • To maintain accurate case records, including the provision of discharge instructions and case reports.
  • To ensure that informed client consent is gained for patient interventions, and that owners are kept up to date with ongoing treatment costs.
  • To report laboratory results and adjusted treatment plans to owners and referring vets in a timely manner.
  • To ensure charging is appropriate and complete, for each patient.
  • To provide advice to referring vets, to support wider patient care and maintain excellent relationships with referring practices.
  • To contribute to extra-curricular, regular activities, such as book club, journal club, medicine seminars and other related medicine activities.
  • To actively participate in clinical research, as outlined by ECVIM requirements.
  • To participate in provision of an out of hours rota.
  • To support growth and development of the service, by participating in the provision of continuing professional development and other outreach activities, where appropriate.
  • To contribute to the teaching, supervision and assessment of students on their clinical rotations.
  • To follow all Langford Vets protocols and policies.
  • To follow Dog and Cat Friendly Practice principles and always promote this standard of care.
  • To undertake any reasonable requests made by the service clinical leads and hospital management.
  • Where applicable and agreed, to liaise and collaborate with external partners.
  • Proactively identify and act upon opportunities for business improvement. Openly identify and discuss problems to implement and sustain improvements that increase the value we deliver to our, clients, employees, and students.
