Intensive Care Unit

Our state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit is run by our dedicated Emergency and Critical Care Team and lead by Helen Wilson, our specialist in Emergency and Critical Care. The ICU is staffed 24-hours a day by our ICU nurses and vets. Many of our ICU nurses have achieved further qualifications in Emergency and Critical Care.

The ICU is central to our hospital, providing the highest level of care possible for our sickest and most complex patients across all of our services, Internal Medicine and Emergency and Critical Care, Cardiology, Neurology, Soft Tissue Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery and Dermatology. No matter what has brought a pet to our hospital, our ICU is on-site and available to care for them should they need it, either if they arrive critically ill or if their condition deteriorates during their hospital stay.

Our ICU is able to care for all medical emergencies, as well as caring both pre- and post-operatively for patients undergoing any major surgery, including thoracic, abdominal, orthopaedic, spinal and brain surgery. Our specialist-led Diagnostic Imaging team assist us with diagnosing critically ill patients and with surgical planning for patients requiring complex surgery. We also work closely with our Anaesthesia and Analgesia teams in the pre- and post-operative period, drawing on our collective expertise to deliver the most comprehensive patient plans.

We have state-of-the-art ICU facilities, including, but not limited to:

  • On-site blood products for patients requiring blood transfusions
  • Patient blood typing and cross-matching facilities
  • Point-of-care ultrasound for beside diagnostics
  • Blood gas analysis including co-oximetry
